Position of WWF Russia on nuclear power
WWF considers the development of nuclear energy to be unnecessary. We are convinced that humanity can completely solve the problem of energy security and climate and simultaneously eliminate energy poverty without nuclear energy. This is absolutely true for Russia, which has large reserves of energy and a high potential for energy conservation and renewable energy sources.
WWF strongly opposes the import of radioactive waste into Russia and the transformation of the country into a radioactive waste dump. WWF does not support the reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) in principle. SNF from operating stations should be disposed of, rather than processed, because a huge amount of low-radioactive liquid waste is generated during processing, which in turn requires disposal.
WWF considers it necessary to concentrate efforts on decommissioning existing reactors as they exhaust their resources and eliminate the accumulated damage, including solving social problems related to nuclear power facilities.
