ABOUT CENTRAL ASIA REGION

The Region of Central Asia includes 5 States — Kyrgyz Republic, the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Republic of Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and the Republic of Uzbekistan.

It covers a territory of about 4 million sq. km and is a vast land of great contrasts in landscape and biological diversity — from steppes and deserts to mountain forests and tundra.

WWF's work is aimed at:

  • Supporting protected natural areas (PAs);

  • Conservation of rare species of animals - Persian leopard, snow leopard, Bukhara deer, goitered gazelle, saiga antelope, and others;

  • Development of an integrated ecological network (ECONET), including the creation of new protected areas and a system of environmentally friendly development in the "ecological corridors";

  • Climate change mitigation and adaptation;

  • Educating the local population and supporting alternative, environmentally friendly ways to develop the local economy, as well as environmental education.
