This year Kursk and Novy Urengoy were among three cities whose residents were most actively involved in the largest international environmental action.

In the near future the administration of Lipetsk will receive a 30-centimeter statuette with gilded brass globe and emerald green wreath, where the name of the city will be engraved.

Lipetsk holds the status of the capital of the Earth Hour until the next Earth Hour-2019. Kursk, the runner-up in an informal rating of activity of city residents in the Earth Hour, ended up one step away fr om the victory. Novy Urengoy is the third. Surgut, the winner of the last year, remained in the top five, taking the fourth place. Murmansk, Nizhnevartovsk, Oktyabrskoe, Kemerovo, Ramenskoye are in top ten and Stavropol is the tenth. (See top 20 cities-participants of the action below).

Of course, the residents of Moscow and St. Petersburg left the biggest number of the marks on the map in the absolute value. Nevertheless, Moscow and St. Petersburg did not enter the top twenty in terms of the share of participants of the action among the general population.

In total, 170 cities of Russia joined the Earth Hour this year (150 cities in 2017). In Moscow about 1,000 people joined the action in Red Square and in Zaryadye Park.

To support the city and to confirm participation in the action residents had to mark their locations on the map on the official website of the Earth Hour: 60.wwf.ru.

Moreover, on the website of the campaign "Vote for nature" («Голосуй за природу») more than 110,000 signatures were collected under the collective appeal to the President, wh ere the environmentalists call for measures addressing the most pressing environmental problems: to protect nature reserves, to remove obstacles to development of renewable energy, to introduce a system of separate garbage collection and recycling.

A fundraising took place on the website of the "Earth Hour" during the entire campaign and it was focused on the restoration of the red book boxwood, a relict plant, which was basically destroyed by a pyralid, brought in during the preparation for the Olympic games in Sochi 2014. The partners and the supporters of WWF Russia have already managed to raise 2.5 million rubles for the creation of a special nursery garden for young seedlings of boxwood to prevent the complete disappearance of this ancient plant.

This year 188 States took part in the Earth Hour worldwide, which became an absolute record for all 11 years of the global campaign. Almost 18,000 buildings and facilities, including the world-famous Eiffel Tower, Big Ben, the Acropolis of Athens, the Sydney Opera House, the Empire State Building, the Pyramids of Giza, the Tower Bridge and many others went dark for 1 hour. Millions of people of all continents have expressed their concern about the future of the planet.

During the action images and hashtags of the global campaign of WWF were used more than 3.5 billion times. Non-governmental organizations, business organizations and individual activists carried out thousands of environmental projects worldwide aimed at advancing the alternative energy sources, at environmentally responsible lifestyle, at preserving  the biological diversity of the Earth, as well as improving the legislation.

The Earth Hour is organized by WWF Russia with the support of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation and The Department of Natural Resources Management and Environmental Protection of Moscow.
