A Year for Protected Areas kicked off in Amurskaya Province
«2012 is really unique due to the number of prominent dates reminding people on nature conservation in the Province. 12 protected areas are celebrating jubilees this year. Among them all three nature reserves – Zeisky, Khingansky, and Norsky where the two first have turned 50, while Norsky – 15, comments Svetlana Titova, protected areas program coordinator at WWF Russia Amur branch.
Amur branch of the Socio-Ecological Union, one of our partners among the grassroots in the Province, will celebrate its 20 anniversary. Since the 90th this NGO has been taking an active role in creating over 2 million hectares of protected areas in the region”.
In cooperation with Amurskaya Province Administration, Department of Fauna Protection and Protected Areas Directorate, high schools and nature reserves WWF has scheduled to commemorate these dates within the whole year. Namely, to hold a broad variety of awareness actions and practical measures assisting reserves’ and refuges’ staff. First activities took place just before the International Wetlands Day as many of the protected areas located in Amurskaya Province conserve these very ecosystems.
On February 1, the Bars nature conservation student brigade met with school kids in the local library and told them about the role of wetlands for nature, held quiz contests and praised those who gave right answers with booklets and small souvenirs.
Next day in the Blagoveshensk State Pedagogical University an exhibition of the kids drawings “Sacred Trails”, and on February 15 in the Provincial Science Library another exhibition will be organized. This time it will be photographs of landscapes, everyday life of people who devoted their lives to nature conservation.
