A modern tourist complex is being constructed in the Udege Legend National Park.

27 september 2019
WWF Russia together with the administration of the Udege Legend National Park and the International Institute of Tourism and Hospitality are implementing a project to create a modern tourist infrastructure in the Park on the banks of the Bolshaya Ussurka River.
Several comfortable houses for tourists with autonomous power supply, sewage and the possibility of all seasonal stay is now underway in the Udege Legend National Park in Primorsky province with WWF support.
Comments Peter Osipov, director of WWF Russia Amur Branch: “Our joint project with the Udege Legend, which is quite large in terms of construction, financial investments and future prospects, continues the work WWF to develop ecological tourism in protected areas of the Russian Far East. Back in 1999-2001, with WWF support, a significant contribution was made to the development of the tourist infrastructure of the Khanka, Lazovsky, Bolshekhekhtsirsky, Khingansky, Komsomolsky, Bolon Lake nature reserves. Since 2007, when the first national parks were established in the Russian Far East, WWF supported them by creating visitor centers and supplying them with the equipment. For instance, as a part of the Nordens Ark Project in Anyuisky National Park, we helped to equip an ethnic village tourist site. Two years ago, together with the Sikhote-Alin Nature Reserve, we prepared and opened a multi-day tour “Along Arsenyev’s Path”. Ecotourism allows people to get acquainted with the unique nature of the country, provides environmental education and enables nature reserves to attract additional funds to implement their main mission on preserving the Amur basin wildlife.”

The Udege Legend National Park and WWF Russia Amur branch are close partners for many years. WWF participated in creation of the Park that was established on June 09, 2007, and later helped the new protected area providing with equipment, organizing the protection of the territory, and purchasing a building in Roshchino village.
Comments Alexei Kostyria, PhD, senior coordinator of the rare species conservation unit at WWF Russia Amur branch: “As in the WWF’s practice, in this case a scientifically-based approach was applied. To implement this project, we recruited employees from the Department of Tourism and Ecology of the International Institute of Tourism and Hospitality who already have experience in planning recreational and tourist activities in Bikin and Land of the Leopard national parks. In 2018, they elaborated a plan for the tourism development and recreational activities in the Udege Legend National Park and an investment plan for the creation of tourist and recreational complexes “Koreisky” and Ust-Arminsky, and “Verkhne-Arminsky” and “Bolshaya Ussurka” tourist camps. This work is designed for the future and further search for investors.”

Comments Boris Litvinov, director of the Udege Legend National Park: “The construction of the tourist complex is a landmark event for us. Each year, 1,500 tourists visit the national park, however, the demand is much higher, especially in the peak of the fishing season. We physically cannot accept many tourists yet: there are not enough guest houses and other infrastructure objects. With the construction of the tourist complexes, the situation will change, the tourist flow will increase by 2-3 times. However, we cannot increase it to larger scales according to the Park’s regulations. In any case, this will be a new stage in the development of eco-tourism.”

The Udege Legend National Park is located in the heart of the Ussuri taiga, on the western slope of the Sikhote-Alin mountain range, in the Bolshaya Ussurka, Armu and Perevalnaya river basin. More than half of its territory is covered by intact Korean Pine forests, which is the residence of 5-6 Amur tigers, and considering the transit ones, their number reaches at least 10 individuals.
