Local communities in Nenets Okrug receive support in adapting to climate change
30 november 2022
11 successful projects of local communities and a big event for entrepreneurs developing tourism - the second year of the implementation of the WWF Program for Adaptation to Climate Change has come to an end in the Nenets Autonomous Okrug.
In 2022 WWF program helped create and equip 2 guest houses in the villages of Nes and Oma, build a craft house in Indiga and a bone carving workshop in Nes, development of traditional fur tailoring in Nes and Oma, carpentry in Kotkino, formation of 2 tourism products on the Kanin Peninsula and even the construction of greenhouses in Nes and the development of traditional fish processing in Oma. In total, WWF financed work in the region in the amount of almost 10 million rubles, of which 6.6 million were received directly by the authors of 11 local initiatives.
Eco-tourism developed most actively this year. The final event of this work was the second School of Hospitality in the village of Indiga. The three-day meeting, initiated by the Krasny Gorod (Red Town) tour operator, brought together 13 entrepreneurs from different villages in the region, as well as representatives of the local authorities and bussiness. The experts gathered to exchange experiences, help finalize the tourist proposal of their colleagues from Indiga, discuss existing mechanisms for supporting the tourism industry from the region, innovations in the legal field and a host of other important issues.
“We held the first School of Hospitality last year. Now, a year later, its specific results are very inspiring: 3 tourism projects in Shoyna, Nes and Oma villages have received financial support from WWF-Russia during this time and have already developed tourist routes, equipped guest houses, purchased the necessary equipment for working with tourists and tested their tours on real guests of the region,” says Svetlana Kopylova, the curator of this work, director of the Agency for the Development of Rural Initiatives. - The result of our current meeting, in addition to the exchange of experience and inspiration, was a number of ideas that can and should be developed only together, by combining the efforts of entrepreneurs, authorities, and support centers. We very much hope that these ideas will come to life in the very near future.”
