The biggest population of snow leopard in Russia will be protected
On December’12 the first meeting of the committee of reservation organization was held in Gorno-Altaysk.
The representatives from the Russian Department of the Interior, Altai Republic administration, research institutions and conservation organizations, including WWF Russia, participated in the work of the committee. In the issue of the meeting it was decided to execute design and survey works to create a state wildlife preservation «Saylyugemsky» on the Saylyugem range and in the Argut basin.
WWF Russua, UNDP/GEF Altai-Sayan project and Department of the Interior of Russia will finance the project; scientists from the Gorno-Altaysk State University and workers from the reservation «Altaysky» and «Katunsky» will implement it.
The development of the basis for reservation creation must have been finished up to August 2008. According to international importance of this territory the reservation is expected to be included in the UNESKO Worldwide Net of Biosphere Reservations.
- The creation of Saylyugemsky reservation was expected by specialists as early as 80-th, and we are glad that these expectations are going to come true. The reservation will protect the biggest population of snow leopard (30-40 animals), big population of argali and ibex, - Vladimir Krever, coordinator of the biodiversity reserving programme WWF-Russia, says.
Today 22% of 92 600 square kilometres of Altai Republic are occupied by protected areas. Five of them are called the objects of World nature heritage by UNESKO.
