New protected areas will be established in Altai

WWF Russia supported the decision of creation of new reserved areas accepted on the conference that took place in the Altaiski State Nature Reserve
Staff members of the protected areas of the region, of the environmental conservation organizations and of the research institutions took part in the conference. They presented 15 reports and presentations about designing the protected areas network in the Altai-Sayan, about studying and conservation of flora and fauna and ecology of mountain territories.

The result of the conference is the resolution that presents all recommendations about further development of protected areas network of the Republic of Altai and other questions that concern to the conservation of reserved areas, cooperation between protected areas staff and governance.

In particular it was taken the decision about creation of federal protected area on the range Sailugem, nature park “Ak-Cholushpa” and biosphere range of the Katunski State Nature Reserve on the territory of nature park “Belukha”. Besides, it was offered to go to the Russian Committee of UNESCO “Man and Biosphere” program with the request of including Altaiski State Nature Reserve in the World Biosphere Reserves Network. One of the main results of the conference is the decision to set the cooperation between protected areas, Ministry of nature resourses of the Republic of Altai and other concerned parts in conservation of UNESCO World Nature Heritage “Golden Mountain of Altai”.

In September 2007 UNESCO Committee visited Altai to inspect World Nature Heritage “Golden Mountain Altai”. Nature park “Plateau Ukok” worries most of all because gas pipeline to China is planned to be built through its territory.
