New population of the Far Eastern Leopard.

21 march 2003
International working group on Far Eastern leopard conservation met on March 14th in the WWF Russia Far Eastern office. The meeting focused on reintroduction programme for the Far Eastern leopard into its former habitat. Reintroduction issue, raised due to the facts of inbreeding in the South-West of the Primorisky Region, was already discussed in 2001. At that time the experts hesitated to plan introduction of an isolated group – because of the high cost and complexity of the programme. This time the analysis of recent data showed the critical situation with the Far East leopard and necessity of reintroduction programme was expressed by the Group. However, in order to be successful, such a complex programme should be supported at the federal level and by regional administration.
