Ukok plateau is under threat?

05 september 2007
UNESCO comission visited Republic of Altai to assess status of two World's Nature Heritages located here. Chaizu Kyrgys, leader of russian part of Altai-Sayan WWF's project, participated in expedition.
In 1998 five nature sites of Republic of Altai became UNESCO's World Heritages - Altaiski and Katunski State Nature Reserves, Teletskoe Lake, Belukha Mountain and Plateau Ukok. The decision to inspect these places was taken in June 2007 on World Heritage Committee session in New Zeland. The representatives of different ecological organizations declared that Ukok Plateau could be destroyed: new gas pipeline «Altai» is planned to be built through this plateau.
