The Altai-Sayan Protected Areas Council will be established

22 february 2008
The main objects of the Council are assistance in the partnership between protected areas and local communities and development of the transboundary conservation cooperation

In 1995 Russia ratified Convention on biological diversity (CBD) and binded to protect its unique nature. In 2004 all parties of the CBD including four Altai-Sayan countries approved Program of Work on Protected Areas (PoWPA) which acknowledges the leading role of protected areas in nature conservation.

Considering such liabilities to be the unique chance for protected areas network development WWF worked out the project “Protected areas for a living planet” to accelerate the PoWPA implementation in five global Ecoregions including the Altai-Sayans. The project supposes the formation of partnership between governments, NGOs and civil society for coordination of different activities in protected areas development, exchange of experience and results of work. One of the first steps in this direction is the creation of the Altai-Sayan Protected Areas Council.

The representatives of government, conservation organizations and the experts talked about coordination of the activities of Russian regions on protected areas in Republic of Khakassia from 20th to 22nd February. The specialists in the Altai-Sayan protected areas creation and management decided what kind of organization the Council will be, who will enter its structure, what kind of the assistance the Council will do. For example, the question about recognition the development of regional protected areas network as one of the priorities of the social-economical development of the region will be resolved with the help of the Council.

The resolution of the first meeting will be send to the Ministry of natural resources of Russia and to the WWF-Russia with the request to support the creation of the Council and to address to the Russian regions (in the Altai-Sayan Ecoregion) with the request to delegate the representatives to the Council structure.
