The antipoaching raid took place in the Sayano-Shushenskiy Biosphere Nature Reserve with the participation of the rangers from the other Altai-Sayan protected areas

15 december 2008
On foot, by boats, on the helicopter – more than 70 thousands ha of the reserved territory were covered by the rangers. Financed by WWF this raid brought good results

The team that worked for 10 days at the territory of the reserve made a good cause for the nature protection of this wild corner of the Sayan Mountains. The rangers from the “Sayano-Shushenskiy” and “Ubsunurskaya Hollow” Reserves as well as from the nature park “Ergaki” took part in the raid.

The use of the helicopter brought very good results: 4 combined ranger-groups were air-assaulted into different points. One group fixed tracks and guns ready for the poaching capture. During 24 hours the rangers have been following the transgressor who was escaping to a place where he had a boat to pass the reservoir. Finally he was kept with the trophies got at the protected territory and handed to the law-enforcement agencies. A criminal case has been initiated.

Pedestrian marches, enormous quantity of snow, lack of overnight stop houses – all these created difficulties for the rangers. Besides the patrolling of the territory the rangers fixed meetings with the animals and kept tab on tracks. All dates will be handed to the science division of the reserve.

The raid obviously brought positive results: the transgressor was kept, poachers’ places were determined, a lot of dead falls, traps and loops were neutralized.

In the course of the interaction between the participants of the raid it was found out that the rangers from different PAs had the same questions and problems that could be solved together. The questionnaire done after the raid let to work out a preliminary action plan: terms and goals that require the participation of the rangers from other PAs are determined. Now the combined action plan for the rangers is being prepared as a grant to WWF.
