Earth Hour 2012 in Altai – Sayan beats all records

WWF Russia estimated that some 15 million people observed Earth Hour in our country – 2012 – a massive 40 percent more than the previous year.

This year a colorful Earth Hour overwhelmed Altay-Sayan as well. The event was officially supported by seven regions of Altai – Sayan Ecoregion. Tuva, Altai and Khakassia Republics, Krasnoyarsk and Altai Regions, Kemerovo and Novosibirsk Oblast Regional governments, partners, volunteers came out in the streets and had events indoors on March, 31. The variety of buildings – from the Administration Towers to the Ferris wheel in central park dimmed or turned off the lights for an hour or longer.

Kids Clubs of WWF Friends in Kemerovo and Altai in a day – long event provided the city and village dwellers with the leaflets on Earth Hour and resource saving. Baltic Quest and a mysterious torch-game were organized by Baltika Beer Company in Novosibirsk. Krasnoyarsk famous café and restaurants network of Vladimir & Co had several candle parties. Yoga- Bar in Krasnoyarsk had a Hundred-Candles Evening and an acoustic music show on Earth Hour. Mega Supermarket in Novosibirsk had a huge flash mob outside the entrance and dimmed the lights of the decoration outside. Groups of bicyclists cycled the street of big cities as a part of newly born movement ‘velo-fireflies” with light-emitting diodes on the arm of their wheels. Beeline Mobile Company dimmed the light in of street advertisement billboards and eleven offices of Siberia. “Pavement Astronomy” Group in Novosibirsk had the stars-observing event for all visitors in a central park. Wide media coverage provided for better involvement of volunteers and participants.
