WWF assists Emergency Response Centers staff to get immediate information on fires in Land of Leopards

20 february 2012
Video camera installed by WWF in the Amur leopard habitats on MTS cell phone transmission tower from now on will be used by Emergency Responce Center of Khasansky district, Primorye, to early detect forest fires.

Getting themselves prepared for the coming spring fire season WWF handed computer hardware and software to the Center and trained the Center's staff how to use them.

«The height of the camera mounting, its rotation speed and 360 degrees viewing angle allow to produce clear images of burning fires and smoke at a distance of 20 km. Operator can easily find hotbed of fire, monitor fire dynamics, and pass exact coordinates to mobile groups of fire fighters, - comments Andrey Purekhovsky, projects coordinator at WWF-Russia Amur branch. - But we need to set more cameras in the vicinity of the village of Kraskino and Barabash to cover priority leopard habitats. WWF hopes that Megafon and Beeline, other mobile operators active in the Land of Leopard, will follow MTS's example and permit to install video cameras on their towers».
