WILD REINDEER MARKED WITH SATELLITE COLLARS IN POMORIE

With the help of collars, WWF Russia experts will be able to monitor the state of the deer group in the southwest of the Arkhangelsk region and the southeast of the Komi Republic. This will help to more accurately determine the habitats and migration routes of animals and save them.
Deer tagging took place on the territory of the Shilovsky reserve in the Krasnoborsky district of the Arkhangelsk region. The experts managed to put collars on 6 adult animals.
The number of wild reindeer in the Arkhangelsk region is rapidly declining due to poaching, cutting down old-growth forests and climate change. The total number of the species in the region is now only 1300-1500 individuals, over 30 years it has decreased by 15 times. In order to take action to preserve the deer in the wild, accurate data on the habitats and movements of animals are needed.
Satellite collar tagging is an effective technique that allows you to obtain information not only about the habitats and migration routes of animals, but even to identify cases of poaching. If the animal is dead, the collar signals this. To put on the collar, experts used sparing methods - special traps that do not harm animals. The process of installing the collar takes several minutes, after which the deer is released into the wild.
Shilovsky Reserve, where the tagging took place, is a significant area for the conservation of the forest reindeer population. On the territory of the reserve, Red Book animals spend almost the entire winter period, here they are in relative safety. However, during migrations to summer habitats, deer can become prey for poachers. In addition, seasonal movement routes pass through areas leased to logging companies. As a result of industrial logging, the natural habitat of the species is destroyed, migration routes are disturbed, which threatens its survival. Clarification of routes and timing of seasonal movements will make it possible to take this data into account when planning and conducting logging, in particular, create buffer zones and introduce periods of restrictions on logging.
