Earth Hour — 2018: Vote for nature!

21 february 2018
Participants in the largest environmental action will send a collective appeal to the elected president, who will be called upon to protect the reserves, remove obstacles to renewable energy, introduce a system for separate collection of garbage and its recycling.

March 24 will be the annual environmental action ‘Earth Hour – 2018’, organized by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). The action is designed to draw attention to the need for responsible attitude to the nature and resources of the planet. The event will begin at 8:30 pm local time.

A week before the action, on March 18, presidential elections will be held in Russia, so ‘Earth Hour – 2018’ will be held under the slogan ‘Vote for Nature’. Participants will be able to vote for the most important environmental initiatives and take part in a collective message to the elected president.

Key issues discussed during the campaign:

1. Protection of nature reserves and national parks
2. Availability of ‘green’ energy
3. Priority of garbage recycling, not incineration

As part of the ‘Earth Hour’ action, entertainment and environmental education activities will be organized in many Russian cities. In Moscow the action is held jointly with the Department of Nature Management and Environmental Protection in Moscow. The campaign will end with a holiday in Zaryadye Park, which will be attended by officials and stars; traditionally the illumination of key monuments, attractions and iconic buildings will be turned off. So, already for the third time the business centre ‘Moscow City’ will join the action.

‘The Earth Hour event, which is taking place in Russia for the tenth time, should remind Russians that power lies in their hands and they can determine what Russia will be like tomorrow: we will either preserve the natural heritage or we will get bogged down in dumps, we will either choose the way of technological and ecological development or we will degrade, ‘commented Igor Chestin, CEO WWF-Russia.
‘Earth Hour’ is an international symbolic action, during which WWF calls to turn off light and household electrical appliances for one hour as a token of non-indifference to the future of the planet. Every year WWF Russia traditionally draws attention to one of the most urgent environmental problems: previous actions were devoted to responsible consumption, ecological footstep, freezing of oil and gas projects on the Arctic shelf, protection of rare species of animals, prohibition of industrial felling in valuable forests, protection of seas from oil pollution and other topics.

Specially for the ‘Earth Hour’ a site has been launched where you can get detailed information about the action, support one or more environmental initiatives, send an appeal to the elected president, take part in a flashmob, pass an entertaining test, mark on the map and help your city win ‘Competition of cities’.

The action has been held in Russia since 2009, and since 2011 it has been attended by 16 to 20 million people annually. In 2017 Earth Hour became the largest in Russia and in the world in the history of the event: it was attended by 184 countries, turned off the illumination of more than 3,100 world sights, in Russia the action was supported by more than 150 cities.

The partners of the action are KASTAMONU, USERVICE, ПАО 'ИК РУСС-ИНВЕСТ', Архангельский ЦБК. The participants are Coca-Cola, ООО 'Энергодиагностика', Ferrero Russia, Auchan.

The official news agency is the RIA Novosti news agency of Russia Today media group. Information partners are the radio station Ekho Moskvy, the Metro newspaper, the 'Живая планета' TV channel.
