The gender of the newborn kittens of leopard was identified

02 september 2016
During the planned vaccination of kittens, it was determined that there are two females and one male in the first triplet litter and same in the second litter- two females and one male.

Among newborns there are two females and one male. We will remind that steams Cherie and Alous became parents of kids. Alous and Cherie - the leopards caught in the native habitat in Turkmenistan in 2009 and transferred to Russia within implementation of the Program of restoration (reintroduction) of a leopard in the Caucasus.

We hope that in two years those kittens will successfully pass all exams on hunting and avoiding humans and will join three leopards that were recently released into the wild of Caucasus mountains”, - says Natalia Dronova , coordinator of  WWF Russia’s project on conservation of the rare species.

Persian leopard became nearly extinct from the Russian territory of Caucasus by the middle of the 20th century.  Right now there are just single cases of entree of those animals in Dagestan, North Osetia, Chechnya and Ingushetia.  This does not give any hopes that population will restore naturally.

In the 20th century, the leopard disappeared from the Russian Caucasus because of humans, mostly due to poaching. The Persian Leopard Reintroduction Program is run by the Ministry of natural resources and environment of the Russian Federation with participation of the Sochi National Park, Caucasus Nature Reserve, A.N. Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution, WWF and Moscow Zoo. And since 2009 it is supported personally by Vladimir Putin.

Unique Centre for breeding and reintroduction of Persian leopard was built in Sochi national park, where special conditions were created that allowed to prepare leopards for independent life in the wild. Enclosures for rehabilitation and breeding, as well as quarantine enclosures, administrative and household blocks and other objects are located on a territory of 11 hectares. In total in the Center from different couples 14 kittens were born.

Financial support to the program was provided by the companies EXNESS, ROSAN, Panasonic, Rosa Khutor, Amway, VimpelCom, and also Fund of support of social innovations of Oleg Deripaska «Volnoe delo». Also the program was supported by about 1000 supporters of WWF of Russia.

Addition: On September 5 the gender of three more kittens, which were born this summer at couple of leopards of Zadig and Andrea - two females and one male has been defined. Kittens are healthy and feel well. We will remind that the male Zadig and female Andrea have arrived to the Centre for breeding and reintroduction of Persian leopard for participation in Persian Leopard Reintroduction Program from a zoo of Lisbon.
