The governor of Kamchatka announced the creation of the Council on June 1. The first meeting of the assembly took place on June 26 via the Internet.
Teachers, scientists, representatives of regional authorities, business, and public organizations became members of the Public Environmental Council under the governor of Kamchatka krai. About 20 participants attended the first meeting of the assembly.
"The members of the Council plan to discuss a number of environmental issues of the region. We are mainly focused on the future of the protected areas and ecotourism development. Another urgent issue is mining for placer gold in vulnerable salmon ecosystems. During the upcoming meetings, we plan to raise the topic of taking into account the opinion of state authorities, local administration, and the public during the implementaion of projects that are not subject of state ecological appraisal," said Sergey Rafanov, director of WWF-Russia's Kamchatka/Bering Sea Ecoregional Office, member of the Public Environmental Council.
The joint efforts of environmental experts, activists, and officials will help to identify and rapidly address challenges and threats to the nature.
