55th jubilee of the Primorsky Province Agricultural Academy

12 september 2013
The Institute of Forestry of the Primorsky Province Agricultural Academy, WWF’s partner in introducing sustainable forestry, forest restoration and bringing up future forest rangers, is celebrating its 55th jubilee.

The cooperation of the Agricultural Academy and WWF Russia Amur branch started in 2010. However, within this short period of time a lot of important things have been done. First of all, in 2011 the Academy leased a forest area of 29 000 hectares as a conservation concession which is valuable as a territory for conducting scientific research studies and as a buffer zone of Ussuriisky Nature Reserve.

The students of the Academy are trained on the concession, scientists conduct their research studies, forestry specialists conduct tender cutting for the young rare plants. Nature protection brigades “TIS” and “Forest Ranger” protect this area from forest fires. The eco trail accepts groups of schoolchildren and adults with the excursions. With WWF support, the forest nursery is organized on the territory of the concession and training equipment is purchased. This year the nursery has 100 thousand Korean pines and other tree species which will be planted in the Land of Leopard in future.

It’s important that mechanization of the growing samplings is on a high level. The nursery has a tractor. Due to WWF’s help the territory of the nursery is enclosed with a fence, parking shelter is built, laboratory is reconstructed. In other words, the nursery of the Agricultural Academy is well equipped and meet all modern requirements for training forestry professionals.
