Primorye hosted All-Russia Conference on Silviculture

01 october 2015
Over 50 participants came from 11 Russian cities and from abroad to discuss current questions of tree breeding at the conference held on October 2-3 at the Primorskaya State Agricultural Academy based in Ussuriisk.

WWF, the Amur Tiger Center, and the Forestry Department of Primorsky Province were among the conference’s organizers.

“Sustainable management of the forests was one of the main topics of the conference, notes Elena Fedichkina, forest program coordinator at WWF Russia Amur branch. Forest sector plays a very important role in the development of the region comprising, according to different estimates, 5-10 % of the gross domestic product of the Far East. Though the region is rich with timber the resources are not limitless. The most accessible territories for logging have been already developed and now logging companies are moving into the forests of high conservation value.”

Elena presented an analytical report of WWF Russia on timber turnover in the Russian Far East over the recent ten years, 2004-2014.
