WWF AND THE MINISTRY OF NATURAL RESOURCES AND ENVIRONMENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF NORTH OSSETIA-ALANIA JOINTLY IDENTIFIED VIOLATIONS IN THE FORESTS OF THE REPUBLIC

28 january 2022
WWF and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of North Ossetia found violations with damage of almost 5 million rubles, prevented illegal logging while conducting a joint raid in the forests of the Republic, and handed over the materials to the police. The monitoring was carried out within the framework of the "People for Nature" Project.

In 2020, North Ossetia-Alania ranked top ten regions of Russia in the rating of the effectiveness of the performance of delegated powers in forest relations. Nevertheless, WWF-Russia volunteers are conducting public monitoring of compliance with forest legislation in the Republic.

Forest monitoring in the Caucasus regions has been conducted within the framework of the "People for Nature" Project for more than 3 years. During this time, hundreds of violations have been identified, more than a dozen criminal cases have been initiated and thousands of hectares of valuable forests have been saved from logging. The regional authorities do not always meet the nature conservationists and admit mistakes, and they help in identifying violations even less often. But the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of North Ossetia agreed on and took the initiative to conduct a joint inspection with WWF-Russia volunteers and went to the logging areas of the Republic. Within three days, logging areas in the Prigorodniy and Vladikavkaz Forestries were surveyed.

As a result of the raid, logging at three sites was found illegal. The materials of the inspection were transferred to law enforcement agencies, and now they are being checked. Besides, one criminal case was initiated on the fact of illegal logging in the Prigorodniy Forestry, with the damage amounted to 4,817,157 rubles.

Also, sanitation harvesting was prevented in the Alagirskiy Forestry on an area of 7 hectares. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania recognized that the documents for this logging do not correspond to the latest data as there are some errors. In this regard, a new survey has been scheduled, which should exclude faulty logging.

"I want to note that joint inspections indicate openness of authorities, the desire to work, to recognize and correct their own mistakes. Moreover, such a position of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment demonstrates the desire of the authorities to really stop and prevent illegal activities in their region, - says Elena Cherkasova, Senior Forest Officer of Russian Caucasus Ecoregional Office WWF-Russia. -It is also vital not to stop at inspections and to work with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Public Prosecution Office to find and punish the violators."

WWF-Russia thanks the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania for being open and willing to cooperate.
