WWF-RUSSIA HALTED 30 HECTARES LOGGING OF VALUABLE FOREST IN KABARDINO-BALKARIA

15 july 2019
Areas of the Republic’s valuable forests were saved thanks to close cooperation of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and the Ministry of Natural Resources of Kabardino-Balkaria.

WWF-Russia analyzed state auctions for the sale forest plots on legality in the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic in June 2019 to verify facts of potential sale protected forest areas.

"Detailed analysis of shows that 9 protected forest areas sold at two auctions in 2018 and 2019 in Kabardino-Balkaria. Timber harvesting is prohibited by the law of the Russian Federation in those areas", - explains Elena Cherkasova, Forest Officer of the "Russian Caucasus" Ecoregional Office, WWF-Russia.

WWF-Russia’s Official Appeal for necessity to check and cancel these auctions was sent to the Ministry of Natural Resources and ecology of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic after that immediately.

The Ministry confirmed information on violations in a response. By that time, logging was in two sites already, but logging’s planning on other 7 forest sites with an area of 29.4 hectares has been stopped.
