Talent Fair in the Land of the Leopard, Primorye, Russia Far East

23 april 2013
The event was organized by Khasansky District Department on Education in cooperation with WWF with the financial support of The Eurasian Center for Leopard Population Research, Preservation, and Recovery.

Over 180 kids representing 13 secondary schools from Khasansky District and 3 schools of Nadezhdinsky District participated in the Talent Fair.

Kids living here know pretty well the role Land of the Leopard National Park will play– thousands of tourists will visit these places really soon. And the local people will benefit from eco-tourism development having an opportunity to earn additional money.

As early as last year local teachers together with WWF decided to try whether the kids are talented enough to produce eco souvenirs for the potential tourists.

«The main idea of the Fair was very simple. We wanted for the kids to realize that living side by side with the National Park could be profitable. What is needed is to understand which souvenirs will be on demand by the guests, notes Svetlana Titova, projects coordinator at WWF Russia Amur branch.

«Another important thing is to have a talent to make a souvenir or bake a cake. Every item at the Talent Fair has been sold out. Thekidshaveearnedmoney. Somebody will bring it home and boast the first earning in front of the parents and friends; others will donate the money to a local eco club.   This decision will be made by the kids themselves. But they have left the Fair in a good mood».

The first place was given to the secondary school #1 from the village of Slavyanka, the secondary school #1 from the village of Barabash wasa ranked as the second one while the third prize went to the secondary school #2 from the village of Slavaynka that hosted the event.

Also at the Fair master classes were organized. Teachers and tutors from the Children’s Creativity Center taught the kids and grownups how to make pieces of art of the paper, leather, natural material, utility wastes.
