Issyk Kul Lake is preparing for the International Snow Leopard Forum

01 may 2013
To prepare for the forum, which will take place in the summer of 2013 in Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan), the participating countries have identified key directions of the snow leopard conservation work.

On April 18-20 2013, the State Environment Protection and Forestry Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan and WWF/USAID project «Conservation and Adaptation in Asia's High Mountain Landscapes” initiated a workshop in Kyrgyzstan to prepare the content of the forum.

The participants have identified the main directions of the snow leopard conservation work: monitoring and research; protection of its habitats and prey, both in protected areas and outside; involvement of local communities in the conservation work; promotion of snow leopard conservation.

The participants of the workshop also revised the implementation plan of the “Strategy of snow leopard conservation in Kyrgyz Republic in 2013-2023” and the “National priorities of snow leopard conservation” (this document will be integrated in the Global Snow Leopard Conservation Strategy).

Among the workshop participants were Government Office and State Environment Protection and Forestry Agency of the Republic of Kyrgyzstan, WWF, international NGOs, and Sarchat-Eertashsky strict nature reserve.

On the initiative of the President of Kyrgyz Republic Almazbek Atambayev in summer of 2013 Bishkek, the capital of the country, will hold the International Snow Leopard Conservation Forum.
