ABOUT WATER CONTAMINATION IN KAMCHATKA'S KHALAKTYR BEACH AREA
02 october 2020
At the moment, WWF-Russia possesses the following information: the government of Kamchatka is aware of the situation and is taking measures to assess the scale of the pollution and identify the pollutants present
"According to our information, all the appropriate and relevant agencies are involved in resolving the situation and have already taken samples showing excessive levels of phenols and petroleum products," comments Aleksey Knizhnikov, Head of the Programme for the Business Environmental Responsibility at WWF-Russia. "At the moment, there are several working theories of what might have been the source of the pollution, but, as yet, we do not possess enough proof to adopt and disclose any of these theories. Currently, WWF-Russia is considering the possibility of arranging real-time satellite monitoring of the site."
WWF-Russia's experts are studying and analyzing information related to the incident in order to help eliminate the pollution as quickly as possible and minimize its consequences.
