The book was prepared in accordance with the obligations of the Russian Federation on the implementation of the Work Program on Protected Areas of the Convention on Biological Diversity, it is the first russian analytical review of the representativeness of the system of federal protected areas (PAs) and its role in preserving rare animal and plant species. The book deals with the classification of protected areas of Russia, the optimization of their categories and forms of their management. On the basis of the conducted analysis of the representativeness and completeness of the protected areas system of Russia, the ways of its further development are proposed. Some chapters of the book are devoted to the analysis of the current state and prospects for the development of the system of marine protected areas of Russia.
