The Paris agreement

In December 2015, a new climate agreement was adopted in Paris. The decisions of the Paris conference include urgent assistance to vulnerable and weak countries in their adaptation to climate change and in the transition to low-emission development pathways. This is very important for WWF’s projects in Central Asia. The Paris Agreement will help Russia implement projects on greenhouse gas emissions reduction; preservation of forests; adaptation of the most vulnerable regions, ecosystems, and communities to adverse weather events. Adaptation is a new feature of the Paris Agreement, which makes it different from the Kyoto Protocol. WWF-Russia launched adaptation activities back in 2000, but it was not until now that adaptation became a global priority. The Paris Agreement obliges all countries to approve national adaptation plans and long-term strategies of low-emission development. Another important outcome is that the Agreement requires preservation of all forests as carbon ‘sinks’ and absorbers of atmospheric CO2.
