The demand from society and the state for disclosure of data on environmental impact has been growing over the past few years. For example, during the Earth Hour campaign in 2021, over 70,000 people supported WWF-Russia's appeals to the Russian Government and business associations, requesting access to information on the state of the environment. Representatives of government agencies also stress the importance of developing ratings:
"We would like to have an environmental rating that provides public access to information on companies' compliance with environmental requirements. That way, everyone would be able to see how everything works. The production sector is slowly but surely getting used to the presence of government and the public in its life," says Svetlana Radionova, Head of the Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resources.
Ratings allow stakeholders to obtain objective and comparable data on disclosure of environmental information by companies, compare data between industries and sub-industries, and track the dynamics of industry averages. Transparent environmental information makes it possible to exercise effective public and state control over the impact of enterprises on the environment, thus contributing to the introduction of sustainable principles and reducing the negative environmental impact of the production sector.
